FLY WEST BY DAY, FLY EAST BY NIGHT.

FLY WEST BY DAY, FLY EAST BY NIGHT.

A simple rule for choosing the right flight when you're crossing time zones.

When a long-haul flight is part of the journey, the time you fly can make a bigger difference than you think.

A flight at the wrong time can leave you exhausted before your trip has even started. A well-chosen one, on the other hand, can help you arrive feeling more rested and ready to explore.

Our rule of thumb?

Flying west? Go by day.
Flying east? Consider the night.

It's not a strict rule — but it's one of those little planning choices that can make a long journey feel much easier.

✈️ FLYING WEST? GO BY DAY.

When you're travelling west, especially on a very long-haul flight, we prefer a daytime departure.

If possible, look for a flight leaving around 11 a.m.

Why?

Because you can have a proper night's sleep before travelling, arrive at the airport without having to wake up at an impossible hour, and then spend the long flight gradually moving through the day.

You'll usually have time for a meal, a film, a book, a nap and a little downtime before landing.

And when you arrive, you're much more likely to still have some energy left for the evening.

What if there isn't a good daytime flight?

Don't automatically choose a worse flight just because it leaves from your nearest airport.

Sometimes adding a stopover before the long-haul flight is actually the smarter choice.

For example, when we travelled from Verona to Vancouver, our route was:

Verona → London → Vancouver

We flew to London first, spent the night there, and continued to Vancouver the following day on a daytime flight.

Instead of starting the trip with a very long, exhausting journey, we turned the connection into a small first stop.

Sometimes the best itinerary isn't the shortest one. It's the one that makes the whole journey easier.

🌙 FLYING EAST? CONSIDER THE NIGHT.

Going east is a different story.

If the flight is relatively short — say up to around five hours — an early or mid-afternoon departure can still work well.

But when you're looking at an 8–10 hour flight, we prefer an evening departure whenever possible.

Around 9 p.m. is a good starting point.

Yes, you'll probably be more tired when you board.

You've already lived through a full day, after all.

But that's also the point.

After dinner, the cabin usually gets darker and quieter, giving you the opportunity to sleep during the second half of the flight and arrive closer to the rhythm of your destination.

It's not about sleeping perfectly on a plane.

It's about giving your body a better chance to start adapting to the new time zone.

THE DEARLY RULE

When we're choosing a long-haul flight, we don't only look at the price or the duration.

We also look at when the flight happens.

Going WEST?

☀️ Prefer daytime.
Especially for very long flights.

Going EAST?

🌙 Consider evening departures.
Especially for 8–10 hour journeys.

And if the perfect flight doesn't exist from your city?

Look beyond the airport.

A well-planned stopover can sometimes turn a tiring journey into a much better start to the trip.

DEARLY TIP

Don't just book the flight that gets you there.
Book the flight that helps you arrive well.

Because the journey is part of the trip, too.
